How to Get Helpful Feedback:
Ask helpful questions.
Here’s why I see people not getting the feedback they need:
- they’re not really wanting feedback; they’re wanting encouragement
- they’re not sure what they need help with
- they don’t ask for specific feedback
If you don’t ask for specific feedback you’ll usually just get a random stream of consciousness.
Without specific requests you place the burden on the other person to work out what you need.
They don’t have a focus, which can waste their time.
You can make it easier for them and more valuable for you if you provide simple instructions.
For instance, if you want feedback on a landing page you could ask:
- what’s not clear
- what’s missing (for you)
- what would you get rid of (for you)
Give some context as to what you’re trying communicate and to whom (i.e. target audience).
Don’t ask:
- do you think this is a good idea?
- what do you think?
Unless you’re happy with random streams of consciousness then help them help you.
I recently created a guide for writing LinkedIn posts.
I got some really useful feedback on my shitty first draft.
Which help me complete a final version (my minimum lovable product) in less than a day.
What specific feedback requests have you made to accelerate your progress?
