I talked on a panel about AI.
The title of the event is “AI is not inevitable to my business”
Is this true?
There are so many challenges with talking about AI:
- the technology is complex
- its definition isn’t clear
- its application is wide spread
The debate is at so many levels
- ethical
- social
- commercial
- political
I do struggle engaging in the conversation (particularly on social media) because I feel that we’re not always talking about the same thing.
But I’ll have a go.
At the very least so I can educate myself a bit more.
And prep for the panel. 😉
As an entrepreneur, micro-business owner and “content creator” AI is incredibly helpful.
AI helps me write.
AI helps me organise my time.
AI helps me do my work more efficiently (and arguably more effectively).
I see the benefits.
But I’m also aware that the types of AI I use require a lot of infrastructure, energy and data.
- where is this infrastructure located?
- what’s the environmental impact of this infrastructure
- who owns the data? (and who’s liable if that data is incorrect?)
AI is a perfect storm of economics and ethics.
These storms have always circled technologies that impact society.
And so we have complicated conversations.
But conversations we’ve probably had in the past about other technologies.
When it comes to AI, I don’t have any answers.
But I do believe that if we talk more about it we can find better questions.
What are your thoughts on AI and it’s inevitability?

The cat is out of the bag, though that doesn't mean we can't make it better, fairer or safer! I'm advocating in my work role for education for all so that everyone has the opportunity to understand it and see if it's right for them, and secondly to call out biases when I see them. Image generation isn't kind to women of my age, it wants to make me look 20 or 80, it can't cope with 40/50!
